Private Reserve Just about every antiques dealer eventually becomes a collector, if for no other reason than in a retail business the inventory is going to build up. The nice thing about this business is that it makes good sense to keep inventory as it tends to increase in value over time. I often tell my customers that, so long as they take good care of what they buy, it will never be worth less than it is today. How many traditional retailers can honestly say that? If I didn't believe it myself, I wouldn't have a personal collection. Once I started collecting for myself, I came to realize that when we buy rarities we pay for the privilege of taking care of them. Being a caretaker for something that society values and will last longer than I will gives me a higher sense of purpose, and that's something I think I share with my customers. Here are several items in my "Private Reserve." I keep them because I personally enjoy them, enjoy looking at them or am just proud to own them. They are investment-grade in terms of value and condition. I feel far more comfortable owning these things than stocks and bonds. But as they say "Everything is For Sale." This area is rich in its tradition of holding estate auctions; they are practically a way of life here. The area is also rich in desirable merchandise, since Pennsylvania Germans are well-known as collectors of everything from dolls, to porcelain, to primitives, to Civil War memorabilia. They also keep their things in pristine condition, as anyone who has traveled through and seen the farms of Lancaster County can attest. That is why our merchandise is generally exceptional; and why very few of our buyers return what they buy from us.
